A Striping Test to Try

You can set striping on either a file or directory with the lfs setstripe command. First, set it for a file that you want to create, then add data to the file (pretending in this case that the amount of data is 300 GB or so):

Now try the same thing for a directory. First, create a directory, then set its striping, then make a file within that directory.

In both cases, you should see the file striped across three OSTs. (Be sure to remove the files and the directory when you are done.)

Future versions of Lustre may allow the user or administrator to choose different striping methods that are enhanced over RAID 0, such as RAID 1 (redundancy) or RAID 5 (parity protection).
