AI has not only caught the attention of the wider public, but it is also being actively integrated into the scientific research process through the use of machine learning and deep learning technologies. Here we provide a brief overview of some of those endeavors, and describe how AI tools are changing some of the ways that we conduct scientific research, analyze data, and model the world around us. In addition, we describe how AI systems themselves are fruitful objects of scientific investigation.
